Why is the Flu Vaccine Important?
The Flu is Common and Can Be Serious
The flu is a virus, but it is not just another cold! While some cases can be more mild, the flu can cause a severe infection and often requires medical care. Sometimes the flu is serious enough to require hospitalization, or even cause death. In the 2023 flu season, the CDC estimates that there were at least 35 million cases of flu, 400,000 hospitalizations, and 25,000 deaths from the flu nationwide.
Some Children are Especially Susceptible
The children at the highest risk for more severe flu illness are children less than 5 years old (and especially less than 2 years old), and children with chronic medical conditions, including asthma and obesity. We encourage everyone to get the flu vaccine because it is much easier to prevent the infection or reduce its severity through a vaccine than it is to treat a serious infection once it has already happened.
The Flu Vaccine is Effective
The flu vaccine is formulated every year to protect against the strains of the flu that are predicted to be the most common that year. In the 2023 flu season (as of February 2024), the CDC estimated that for children, the flu vaccine decreased the risk of needing clinic care for the flu by 59-67%, and the risk of hospitalization associated with a flu infection by 52-61% !
Flu FAQs
Q: Can the flu vaccine cause the flu?
A: No! The vaccine does not cause infection with the flu because the virus used in the vaccine is inactivated. The most common side effect is soreness, redness or swelling at the site of the shot.
Q: Can I or my child with an egg allergy get the flu vaccine?
A: Yes! The CDC recommends that special precautions for those with egg allergies are no longer required, and that anyone with an egg allergy can receive the flu vaccine.
